he proposed College Green Plaza looking from Trinity College. Dublin City Council

Temple Bar traders have some concerns about the new College Green civic plaza

The new plaza will see the area directly in front of the entrance to Trinity College Dublin largely pedestrianised.

TEMPLE BAR TRADERS have raised a number of issues in relation to the new pedestrian plaza planned for College Green.

The new plaza will see the area directly in front of the entrance to Trinity College Dublin largely pedestrianised.

It is proposed that just buses, taxis and Luas trams will be able to move along the route in front of Trinity College towards Lower Grafton Street and Nassau Street.

The Temple Bar Company – which represents business, community and voluntary interests in Temple Bar – raised a number of issues with the proposed development in its submission to an Bord Pleanála.

TBC said that it agreed with the proposed civic plaza “in principle” as it had the potential to be beneficial for Temple Bar and to increase footfall. However, it raised a number of issues in relation to it also.

The issues raised included around traffic management in the area as a result of the diversion of traffic from College Green.

It said there was “data deficiencies” in the Environmental Impact Statement regarding the plaza to do with traffic on Parliament Street.

It also said that EIS lacked clarity with regard to traffic management measures within Temple Bar arising from the proposed development.

Specially, certain businesses in the area raised concerns around parking in certain area.

The Clarence Hotel raised concerns around parking for guests and deliveries being brought to their premises.

Concerns were also raised about increased traffic on Sycamore Street, which could “impede deliveries (such as large theatre sets) to the Olympia Theatre”.

A review of the Dublin Bus network and issues around communication with Dublin City Council with regards to revising traffic management were also raised.
